Nesting

  • 2025 / Reclaimed cypress macrocarpa and steel  / Ballarat Plinth Intercultural Gardens

This sculpture sits proudly on the plinth in the Intercultural Gardens in Ballarat. The site honours our multicultural society but I also wanted to include our multi-species community within this. The forms represent the idea of ‘home’ and are based on the domed shaped nests of local fairy wrens. It is community of nests and each one reflects the importance of home. Home is a feeling. Ideally home is a place of comfort, safety and gives us a sense of belonging. I’ve been thinking about the word Eudaemonia which I’ve interpreted to explain a deep sense of fulfilment and flourishing by cultivating a purposeful and nourishing life. It’s beyond hedonism or material success but a deep sense of fulfilment by living in harmony with one’s own ethics. I almost named the sculpture after this idea but went with the more easily relatable name ‘Nesting’.

Located on the corner of Sturt and Pleasant Streets Ballarat until June 2026.
